 FALCON NOTES

Why do we learn and study music?  Do we just do it because we are told we’ll be smarter if we play?  Do we do it because our parents make us?  Do we do it because it’ll look good for College? Do we do it because we love it?  Do we do it because our friends do it?  We all participate in music for different reasons and honestly, I started because my mom made me.  However, I soon realized that I loved it and couldn’t live without it.  I can’t imagine doing anything else in my life.

Regardless of the reasons we study music, the power and influence of music is strong.  By practicing together for a common goal and translating musical ideas through performance, we have an opportunity to transcend the daily rigors of life.  We can actually create musical expressions which stimulate and delight our senses.  The other day in class, I related how a composer chooses expressive articulations in music to how an author chooses words carefully in order to express ideas which transcends beyond the basic words on a page.  Our goal at CV is to play ‘beyond the notes' and play expressively.  As we prepare for our concert on March 20, I hope you will notice the expressive growth in every group.  There are many opportunities to hear us perform in March and the end of April.  I hope to see you all soon!

  SYMPHONIES FOR SCHOOLS

Friday, Feb 29, Symphony class will visit Disney Concert Hall to hear Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 performed by the L.A. Philharmonic.  More than just a straight performance, this is an educational event with a "behind the scenes" feel, with the orchestra in casual dress and lots of pauses with explanations and demonstrations.  Its a great learning experience!  Ask your student about it.
 PTA Founder's Day Service Award
Congratulations to Coleen Godwin.  She will be recognized with the PTA Service Award at the CV PTA Founders day in the Cafeteria on February 26th!  She has spent countless hours ensuring that the Instrumental Music department runs smoothly.  From ordering buses, paying bills, to organizing the music library and all the important things in between, she has allowed me to focus on what every music teacher should do and that is teach students music without having to worry about administrative details.  This program could not be as successful as it is without her devoted help.
