 FALCON NOTES

We have been incredibly fortunate over the past few years with our growth and support as a music program.  Eight years ago, the program was in desperate need of equipment and instruments.  It only had about 100 students involved in just 3 instrumental music classes.  This year, we have 284 students in 5 instrumental music classes.  In the last seven years, we’ve received grants and donations which have enabled us to purchase many items such as cello’s, a drum set, a string bass, timpani, sousaphones, marching drums, a bass drum, a bari sax, tubas, baritones, French horns, and a keyboard for jazz band.  With this record growth of both new instruments and students, it is still imperative to understand that we started with almost nothing 7 years ago yet there are still many things which need to be replaced.  For example, our instrumental repair bill for last year was over $3,000 on student rented instruments.  Most of our instruments are over 20 years old and have been the victims of neglect and student abuse.  We still need to acquire and replace many of our older instruments so that students don’t have to struggle with the mechanics of an instrument just to produce a quality sound.

Thank you for your participation in the CVIM Support Campaign, the car wash, and “Cookie-man” fundraisers.  Every bit helps.

MARCHING BAND CORNER

 LAST WEEK'S GAME

Marching Band members got to experience a college stadium, as CV football played Pasadena High.  Although the game ended in a loss, both CV and Pasadena bands started a "battle of the bands" by playing pep songs to each other across the field.  We also got to watch Pasadena's field show.  Pictures of all our games can be found online!

 THIS WEEK'S GAME

Friday's game will be our 2nd to last away game, played against Burroughs High (
1920 Clark Ave, Burbank, CA 91506).  Call time is 5:30pm (5 for equipment) and we will take buses and trucks to and from CVHS to BHS

 NEXT WEEK'S GAME

Next week will be our first home game at the Glendale High stadium against Burbank High.  Call time is 4:30pm (4 for equipment and uniform crews).  Rosemont students will be joining us for our annual Rosemont Night and will perform in part of the field show as well as perform pep songs in the stands.

 HART RAMPAGE COMP

Next Saturday, October 13 is our first competition of the season!  We will take buses to the College of the Canyons.  CV is scheduled to perform at 7pm as a Divison 4A group, and specific call times will be announced soon.  Students must arrive to CV with their show shirt/MB t-shirt, ready to dress in uniform.  We will be eating dinner as a group but there will probably be snacks available at the competition as well.

 CVIM MEETING 10-9-07

Join us for this month's foundation meeting next  Tuesday, October 9 in the band room from 7-8pm!  This is a great way to find out what's happening in the department and also to meet other instrumental parents.

 KOREAN YOUTH STRING ORCHESTRA

This new, unique opportunity for our community's Korean string students is open to all violin, viola, cell and bass players in high school (or advanced junior high level).  The orchestra is being formed under the direction of local professionals Mick and Stacy Wetzel (members of the LA Philharmonic) and is sponsored by the Korean Branches of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the LA area.

The last audition will take place Saturday, Oct. 13, followed by 2 rehearsals and a dress rehearsal & performance on Sunday, October 28.  Any students who audition will perform with the orchestra and no one will be turned away.  Please pick up a flyer from the instrumental room for more information.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

I never had much interest in the piano until I realized that every time I played, a girl would appear on the piano bench to my left and another to my right.
