FALCON NOTES

Nine out of ten adults and teenagers who play instruments agree that music making brings
the family closer together.
- Music Making and Our Schools, American Music Conference, 2000.

I ran across that quote last week and thought it was extremely important.  As a new parent I'm finding that when my wife and I sing songs or even hum melodies to our 20 month old toddler, it soothes him and makes us all closer as a family.  Even if it is a silly nonsense "made-up" melody just to pass the time while taking a bath, changing diapers, or putting on clothes.
Older students, who are involved in music often play or practice alone.  Whether or not a parent is musical, it should not prevent them from attempting to participate in their child's musical experience.  Some of my fondest memories as a child was when I'd go to my grandmother's house for Christmas and play flute while my uncle played drums, my mom the clarinet and others played the piano.  I'm the only person in my family involved in music, but it was just fun playing together and even though I can't remember what gifts I received that year, I do remember playing music with my family.
So, don't be afraid to take piano lessons, dust off that long forgotten instrument, or start singing!
