CVHS Instrumental Music Email Newsletter | date 3-5-06 / issue #4.23
FALCON NOTES Welcome to another consecutive issue of the Instrumental Email Newsletter. We're in the heat of festival season and already have had major successes. Symphony, Jazz and Concert band have all performed beautifully at their first festival of the year. Symphony has already performed at two and received superior ratings at both festivals. Concert band received a superior on Saturday and Jazz Band earned their highest score in years. More importantly, each group is involved in creating music and learning to express the music in an artistically appropriate manner. Thank you to all the parents who've been chaperones and truck drivers. We could not be as successful without your support. This week our musical "Crazy for You" opens. Make some time to come see it. It's a great show which highlights the talented students we have at CV and demonstrates why we are a BRAVO award winning school. |

EARNS UNANIMOUS SUPERIORS AT SANTA MONICA SCSBOA FESTIVAL Friday, in the pouring rain, Symphony Orchestra traveled to Santa Monica High School and performed in a prestigious all orchestral festival. Orchestras from Santa Monica and the La County for the performing arts as well as other outstanding high schools were present. Earning a Superior at a festival like this is a high achievement and shows that all the hard work we do as a class pays off. Thank you for a great performance. Because of our Superior performance, we qualify for the SCSBOA Regional festival. Great job!!

SYMPHONY PERFORMANCE AT BRAVO AWARDS
Last Tuesday, February 28, a select group of Symphony Strings as well as the Charismatics performed at the Biltmore hotel for the annual presentation of the BRAVO award. Since we were the recipients of last years outstanding school award, we were honored to perform at this year's ceremony. Over 500 educators and administrators from all over Los Angeles County were in attendance for our performance. The superintendent Dr. Escalante and assistant Superintendent Mr. Franklin, as well as the President of the School Board Mary Boger were in attendance. Mrs. Jenner, who is head of the Bravo Committee, said, "Your performance was wonderful and I heard so many compliments about it. It truly brings home to people what BRAVO is all about when they see those talented and composed young adults up on stage. I know it was a long time to wait and I thank you for being so flexible about the tiny stage. The audience loved it. Best - Lynda." Great job Symphony Strings! |

JAZZ FESTIVAL RESULTS - MAYFAIR 3/4 Jazz Band had a great performance besides not having enough time to warm-up. We played in the main gym to an enthusiastic audience. The judges were extremely complimentary as we earned our highest scores every earned at this festival. Last year, our average score was 77, and this year our average score was 84. In Jazz scoring, a mark of 100-85 denotes a superior performance. We play to make music, not for scores, but scores sometimes provides a benchmark for what areas of music we can improve upon. The kids had a great time and knew that they played well, yet also understood what else needs to be done for a cleaner performance. Jae Lee earned a special "Outstanding Jazz Musicianship" award for his awesome Guitar solo in "Greetings and Salutations. |
