FALCON NOTES
Welcome to the 2008-9 School Year!  We currently have 280 students enrolled in all the Instrumental Music Classes.  103 in Marching Band alone!
It has been an exciting and nerve wracking first week as I see new faces, old faces and juggle inconveniences brought on to us due to the construction.  Please help us out by not dropping off your student in the music parking lot.  With the addition of three bungalows, it is a nightmare in the morning with cars and students in that area.
All the classes except Marching Band are starting the year with fundamentals.  Marching Band and Color Guard have been in full swing for 2-3 weeks during "Band Camp."
We've passed out "Scary Scales" (major and minor) as well warm-up Chorals to establish solid warm-up techniques as we work on tone and balance.  Symphony Orchestra has started working on Buckaroo Holiday by Aaron Copland and Beethoven's 6th Symphony.  Jazz band has been dusting off their improvisational chops as they work on head charts and pour over our Jazz Books.  Wind Ensemble and String Orchestra have also received a piece to start mastering.
It's been a hectic, yet great first week.  I'm happy to see  many new students as well as returning students who took a year or two off from music.
This year is shaping up to be our best year yet!

FIRST BOOSTER MEETING OF THE YEAR!

Next Tuesday, September 9th at 7:00pm in the Instrumental room (3106) will be our first parent meeting of the year.

It is extremely important that you attend so that you can meet the CVIM Foundation Board and other hard working parents who make sure Instrumental Music stays alive at CV.

As you are all aware, in order for us to provide a quality music education for every student at CV, we rely heavily on parent involvement through volunteering and donations.

There will be an informative slideshow of Instrumental activities, information about our Spring Trip to Boston, a Korean translator as well an opportunity to meet the Music Parent Boosters and Mr. Schick before the craziness of Back-to-School-night.

I will give extra credit to students if at least one of their parents attend the meeting and signs in!

I hope to see you there!
MARCHING BAND AND COLOR GUARD SURVIVE BAND CAMP!

Drumline, Color Guard and the Marching Band had an intense 2 week Band Camp.  Drumline, Color Guard and Band Council had an extra week to start mastering their music and routines as well as plan out band camp activities.  We were forced to modify our schedule due to construction and field use.  It actually turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to us.  We were able to learn more this year than any previous year at Band Camp.  We even learned the Parade March for this year, "Bonds of Unity."

I'm excited about our show, "The 47 Ronin."  It is a thrilling tale of Samurai and their code of Honor!  Musically it is intense with powerful drums, pulsating rhythms and dynamic melodies!  I hope to see you at the football games and our competitions.
 DROP OFF AND PARKING REMINDER!!

Due to the construction at CVHS, the parking lots are filled with bungalows and traffic is more congested than ever.

Please PLEASE, do NOT ever pull into the "band parking lot" to drop off students or to urn around!  It causes severe congestion,  traffic jams, accidents and injuries.  Allow enough time to drop off students on the sidewalk well above (or below) the music room, preferably on the school-side of the street so they will not have to jay-walk across traffic.  Safety!

On Football Game nights, the band lot will be closed off, and most of the curb will be reserved for buses and gear trucks.  Plan ahead allow time to walk!

 MARCHING BAND REHEARSALS

Because our home game next week is Thursday, we will be adjusting our rehearsal schedule.

Tuesday September 9
Music Rehearsal - 3:15 - 4:30

Wednesday September 10
Field Rehearsal - 4:00-6:30

If you are unable to attend the rehearsal, let Mr. Schick know immediately by filling out an attendance form.

 ABSENCE SHEETS

Don't forget that whenever you are unable to attend a performance or rehearsal, you MUST fill out an absence sheet.  They are located online in the "class forms and handouts" section of the website and in the classroom.
Even if you will be late, or leave early from an instrumental music activity, you MUST fill out an absence sheet so that you don't loose the full points for the event.

Even if an absence is excused, it is up to the student to make up the points.  A student with an excused absence is generally given 50% of the points and needs to make up the rest on their own through extra practicing or written reports.  Mr. Schick will handle each case on an individual basis once the practice card is turned in.
 CLASS HANDOUTS

Class handouts were due Wednesday, Sept. 3 for 20 points extra credit.  After Friday, Sept. 5th, students will loose 5 points for every day handouts are not turned in.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music.
