FALCON NOTES
I came across something this week that had an enormous impact on how I view music and our role in creating and performing it. Karl Paulnack, director of the music division of the Boston Conservatory, spoke to the parents of the 2008-9 Freshmen class and gave an inspirational message about the importance and value of music and the Arts. He started with the Greeks who, according to Karl, thought that "music and astronomy were two sides of the same coin. Astronomy was seen as the study of relationships between observable, permanent, external objects, and music was seen as the study of relationships between invisible, internal, hidden objects. Music has a way of finding the big, invisible moving pieces inside our hearts and souls and helping us figure out the position of things inside us." Click here to read all of Paulnack's speech. Please pass along the speech to whomever you think would appreciate it. |

QUOTE OF THE WEEK "Music is a basic need of human survival. Music is one of the ways we make sense of our lives, one of the ways in which we express feelings when we have no words, a way for us to understand things with our hearts when we can't with our minds." from Karl Paulnack's Speech to Boston Conservatory |
