FALCON NOTES
So many times I am faced with having to convince a student or parent to stay in music.  Usually in the Sophomore year or Junior Year they are encouraged to take on more AP's in order to be more "competitive" for College.  Sometimes this is done without the best interest of the student in mind.  Countless studies and research show that Music is a beneficial if not essential part in a young person's growth.  Both emotionally and intellectually.

"College admissions officers continue to cite participation in music as an important factor in making admissions decisions. They claim that music participation demonstrates time management, creativity, expression, and open-mindedness."
- Carl Hartman, “Arts May Improve Students’ Grades,” The Associated Press, October, 1999.

For more information on music advocacy and the importance of music in a child's growth, please visit http://www.schoolmusictoday.com or http://www.menc.org/

I realize we are only half way into the first quarter, but I felt it was worth mentioning the importance of music and it's beneficial future impact on students.

 SAN FRANCISCO HERE WE COME

The entire Instrumental music department will take their spring tour to San Francisco this year.
We will visit UC Berkley, perform at a Heritage of Music Festival as well as many other fun activities.

If a deposit was already made for Boston, there will be an option of applying it towards San Francisco.
Detailed payment schedules and more information will be passed out on Monday.

If you are interested in chaperoning or planning activities, please let me know as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience in this process and even though traditionally, this year was supposed to be a "big" trip, I feel that in light of the current economy, this is a better alternative to ensure more participation.

SOUTH BAY INVITATIONAL FIELD SHOW RECAP

Last Saturday at the South Bay Invitational Field Show Tournament, the CV Marching Falcons earned their first ever Music Sweepstakes.   It was an amazing accomplishment. There were 12 bands in the competition and sweepstakes is determined by the highest score out of all the bands.  They then divide the bands by categories according to size.  We had two bands in our category and even though we placed second, our music score was 27 points higher than the first place band and we were only 1.25 points away from the first place band in our category.

Additionally, this was our first field show competition of the year and our scores were significantly higher than our competition last year.  We are on the right track and have great things ahead of us!  Go Falcons!

 CHARMS

ASSIGNMENTS and GRADES STATUS are all current in CHARMS.    Ignore Charms "bottom line" average, and just use CHARMS list to check if your student has been completing their assignments.

To access CHARMS online, click here or type https://www.charmsoffice.com. Once you are on the  Log In to Parent's Area, our school log in: crescentav
To see your student's personal information, enter their GUSD ID#.  Once on their personal site, you may reset that password if you wish.

Charms should only be used as a barometer for students Sectionals and assignments.  We are working on incorporating the grade system with our own, yet have found that it is very burdensome and not that user friendly.  We are also currently updating the financial database and it should be complete in the next couple of weeks.  Thank you for your emails and questions.  We are trying utilize Charms to fit our needs and since it is a new system there are still aspects of it we are trying to figure out.

 UPCOMING GENERAL EVENTS

Please plan on attending the 2nd CVIM Meeting of the year.  We are in need of parent support.  We will be discussing the Spring Trip, past and future fundraisers as well as immediate needs.

Plan ahead to come to Symphony Orchestra’s Ensemble Concert on date at 7:00p.m. in the auditorium. Tickets to this event are $5.00 and all proceeds will go to assist Symphony Students on their Spring Trip to San Francisco.

The Winter Concert will be December 19th instead of December 5th.  This change was necessary and next year we will hopefully have the same date as last year.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

 NEW MUSIC DEPARTMENT TRAILER

We have a new trailer!  Thanks to Paul Dutton and CVIM, we have a trailer which will be used to transport Marching Band equipment to football games and competitions in the fall as well as large instruments to festivals in the spring.

 SCSBOA HONOR BAND/ORCHESTRA

Honor Groups – SCSBOA honor applications are now available.  Deadline to turn in the application is November 10th. The auditions will be December 14th at CV.  Extra credit will be given to those who try out.
