FALCON NOTES

School has officially begun!  All is well and good with the Instrumental Music Department.  We currently have 270 students enrolled, and a few students coming to Marching Band for "community service."
It has been an exciting and nerve wracking first week as I see new faces and old faces.  We've been able to assign everyone a music locker and are currently locating the last few instruments to check out to students.  It looks like we'll need to purchase a new Viola and trumpet to keep up with demand.
All the classes except Marching Band are starting the year with fundamentals.  We've passed out "Scary Scales (major and minor)" as well as 4 warm-up Chorals to establish solid warm-up techniques as we work on tone and balance.  Symphony Orchestra is currently working on Beethoven's "Egmont Overture" and Jazz band has been dusting off their improvisational chops as they work head charts and sight read possible tunes.
All in all it's been a great first week.  I've been pleasantly surprised with many new students as well as returning students who took a year or two off from music.
This year is shaping up to be our best year yet!

MARCHING BAND AND COLORGUARD STARTS STRONG IN SEASON-OPENING SPECTACULAR

Last Friday was a night filled with many firsts:  We performed our field show, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" for the first time, we had a colorguard for the first time, we played different nine pep songs, (the most ever for a first game,) we marched on Glendale High's new field, and we marched our parade march "Bravura" at the first football game.
Those accomplishments are indeed great and give us a strong foundation for future performances.  We wouldn't be who we are if we didn't see major room for improvement.  We have a long way to go to be "Competition ready" but for a first performance where people are getting used to uniforms, different acoustics, and a new environment, everyone did a remarkable job.
Even though the football team lost, we saw some promise and know that we will have a strong season.  I know that both the football team and the Marching Band, Drumline and Colorguard will improve as the season progresses and we prepare for competition.
Look online Sunday Night to see pictures of our first Football Game!
What a way to start the year!  It's great to be a Falcon!
FIRST BOOSTER MEETING OF THE YEAR!

This Tuesday at 7:00pm in the Instrumental room (3106) will be our first parent meeting of the year.

It is extremely important that you attend so that you can meet the CVIM Foundation Board and other hard working parents who make sure Instrumental Music stays alive at CV.

As you are all aware, in order for us to provide a quality music education for every student at CV, we rely heavily on parent involvement through volunteering and donations.

There will be an informative slideshow of Instrumental activities, information about our Spring Trip to Florida, a Korean translator as well an opportunity to meet the Music Parent Boosters and Mr. Schick before the craziness of Back-to-School-night.

I will give extra credit to students if at least one of their parents attend the meeting.

I hope to see you there!
 ABSENCE SHEETS

Don't forget that whenever you are unable to attend a performance or rehearsal, you MUST fill out an absence sheet.  They are located online in the "class forms and handouts" section of the website and in the classroom.
Even if you will be late, or leave early from an instrumental music activity, you MUST fill out an absence sheet so that you don't loose the full points for the event.

If an absence is excused, it is up to the student to make up the points.  A student with an excused absence is generally given 50% of the points and needs to make up the rest on their own through extra practicing or written reports.  Mr. Schick will handle each case on an individual basis once the practice card is turned in.
 CLASS HANDOUTS

Class handouts were due Friday Sept. 8 for extra credit.  After Tuesday Sept. 12 students will loose 5 points for every day handouts are not turned in.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music.
